The question that I am asked most often as a dietitian, other than “should I do Whole30/Gluten Free/Paleo/Ketogenic/insert any fad diet here?”, is “what are your favorite healthy snacks?”. Snacks are probably the most important part of my day and eating snacks between meals is one of the first things that I suggest to my clients. For one, there is just something fun about snacking between meals and it helps to break up the day. Secondly, snacks ensure that my blood sugar/energy level stays consistent throughout the day and keeps me from feeling super hungry before meal time. I love string cheese, Greek yogurt, plantain chips + guacamole as snacks but a lot of times I am on the go and need something portable that can’t be refrigerated.
So here are my favorite healthy & satisfying snacks that you can keep with you to ensure you have your best energy for the day:
I love making my own roasted chickpeas but don’t always have the time. These roasted chickpeas are crunchy, flavorful, and will help you to stay full with 5 g protein & 6 g fiber per serving. I recommend these chickpeas to clients that have a peanut/tree nut allergy as it is a great savory snack option. I also use the chickpeas to add some crunch to my salads, in place of croutons. My favorite flavors are Rockin’ Ranch and Habanero! Find these Chickpeas at Sprouts, Target, CVS, World Market, and online.
I love RXBAR because of the packaging – what you see is what you get and you get a lot of wholesome ingredients packaged into a convenient bar. My favorite flavor is Coconut Chocolate – made with real ingredients and with 12 g protein + 6 g fiber, I keep these in my purse as an emergency snack when I am running errands all day or chasing after my 18 month old daughter! You can find these at Publix, Sprouts, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Target, and online.
KIND Fruit Bites
These are newer on my favorite snacks list but I was sent a sample recently and really enjoyed them. Made with only real fruit, these are a great on-the-go fruit snack with no added sugar. I put these in my daughter’s lunches or have them with me when we are out at the park or library so that we can share a snack that we both enjoy. Thankful for snacks like these that we can feel good about feeding our little ones. You can find these at retailers nationwide or online.
RHYTHM Superfoods Kale Chips
This is another snack that I make often but these are so much more convenient. Simple ingredients, crunchy, flavorful, and a yummy way to get a little more nutrition in your day. These are always an impulse buy when I am at the grocery store, as they tend to satisfy my cravings for a savory and crunch snack. I love the Kool Ranch and Zesty Nacho flavors. You can find these at Publix, Kroger, Sprouts, The Fresh Market, and Whole Foods.
I think the name of these are the best way to describe the bars…perfect. Since these do need to be refrigerated, I find that these are a great option to have within an hour or two of leaving home. These bars are very dense and more filling than most bars. I sometime pair with a piece of fruit for breakfast on the go. Depending on how hungry I am at snack time, sometimes I split this up into two separate snacks but sometimes I eat the whole thing. It just depends on the day and how satisfying my meals were that day! I haven’t found a Perfect Bar flavor that I didn’t like but my favorite one is probably Coconut Peanut Butter. You can find these at Sprouts, Whole Foods, The Fresh Market, Costco and online.
Justin’s Nut Butter
Last but definitely not least are these individual packets of Justin’s almond butter. I like to pair it with a piece of fruit for a truly satisfying snack. It’s nice to have these on hand as a good source of fuel for myself and my little one. I also love having this almond butter with some dark chocolate for dessert at home. My husband took several of these packets for his hike through the Yosemite wilderness in August and has been hooked ever since! While these almond butter packets are great, the snack packs are also a wonderful on-the-go option. You can find these at retailers nationwide and online.
