One of the things I love most about living in Birmingham is that it has such a great food scene. It’s consistently landing on the map now as a foodie city. With Food & Wine magazine’s relocation to Birmingham, I can only imagine how the food scene will grow in the upcoming years and I can’t wait! The other thing I love about Birmingham is the innovation & entrepreneural spirit that the people here have. It’s inspiring to constantly meet and run into people that have created a business around their passions. Emily Forsythe is one of those people. I met her a couple months ago at Pepper Place Market at a booth selling Dixie Fresh products. Dixie Fresh is a local company that sells and delivers baby food purees made with fresh, organic, non-gmo fruits and vegetables from farms as local as possible. Basically, a Hello Fresh for babies (ha)! The fruits and veggies are prepared in a way that ensures all the nutrients stay intact. The purees are then frozen in cubes that can be used as needed! They deliver to anyone in the Birmingham area. It is the perfect combination of nutrition and convenience. As a new(ish) mom and Registered Dietitian, I am passionate about connecting other moms/parents with awesome local resources like Dixie Fresh. It can be a great solution that are overwhelmed with what to feed your child.
I had the opportunity to chat with Emily a few weeks later and wanted to share more information about the company with you! We are partnering for a fun giveaway later this week so make sure to head to Instagram on Friday to enter the contest! I’ll be posting some yummy smoothie recipes with Dixie Fresh purees Friday on the blog as well!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I married my college sweetheart Jeremy and we have two boys, John Michael (5) and William (almost 2). After a short stint in the financial consulting world after college at Alabama, I took a leap of faith and bought a long-time bakery and cake supply shop, Louise’s Cakes & Things. I have always loved being a part of customer’s most special occasions, but my preference for healthy foods and cooking style changed pretty dramatically after I became a mom. Dixie Fresh is definitely a reflection of that, as I try to keep everything as healthy and pure as possible.
What inspired/motivated you to start Dixie Fresh?
After I had my second child, I was frustrated with the lack of real food that was available for babies. I found myself desperately searching for food made with wholesome organic ingredients and free from unnecessary additives. I wanted the convenience of buying something prepared, without compromising on quality. When I realized there wasn’t anything comparable to homemade quality on the market locally, I decided it was time for a change and started brainstorming ways to bring fresh baby food to our area.
How are the Dixie Fresh purees different than the purees found in the baby food pouches at the grocery store?
Dixie Fresh purees are made from fresh, organic produce that we source as close to home as possible. The fruits and veggies are pureed and frozen to lock in all of the goodness mother nature intended. We never add any preservatives, artificial flavors or colors. All of our food is made right here in Birmingham.
Explain the three groups that the flavors of the purees are broken into.
First tastes are single ingredient fruits and veggies that have been pureed ultra-smooth for babies beginning solids (usually around 5 months and up).
Playful pairings are blends of two or more ingredients and may have a little more texture for growing babes.
Tot applesauce are apple blends with veggies added- we know how hard it can be to sneak veggies into growing toddlers diets!
Could older kids and adults use your product as well? How so?
Yes absolutely. I created the purees in such a way that they are actually meant for adults and big kids to enjoy. I send ABCs or Hulk in my kindergarteners lunch box almost every day! For him I just put a few cubes in a reusable pouch or his yum box and they are perfectly thawed by lunch. I have also been known to sneak puree cubes in all sorts of dishes- everything from muffins to pasta sauce to help get more veggies in all of our diets!
How does the service work?
We offer subscriptions (recurring each month) and one-time purchase options through our website. We wanted to make it as easy as possible for parents, so we offer free delivery in the Birmingham area with all subscriptions. There are several different subscriptions levels just depending on how much food you want to keep coming each month.
What other products do you sell?
We offer power bites which are meant for big kids and adults and lactation power bites for nursing mommas. We also have several seasonal products that will rotate in and out, including pure pops which have been a big hit this summer in this Alabama heat!
What flavors do you sell? Which flavors do your boys like the most?
We currently sell 9 flavors: ABC’s, Butter Me Up, Carrot Applesauce, Hulk Applesauce, Rainbow Roots, Strawberry Applesauce, Super Baby, Sweet Spuds, and Teacher’s Pick. We also rotate seasonal flavors in and out for our subscription customers. John Michael’s favorites are Hulk & ABC’s and William’s favorite is probably Sweet Spuds, though he loves them all 🙂
Thank you so much Emily for taking the time to share this with us! Stay tuned for a fun giveaway in a couple of days!
